Final Cut

Do you understand the content of the opening? Can you tell what is happening and why?

Are costumes effective in creating the character?

Do props look realistic?

Has editing been successful?

Does the soundtrack fit to the video?

Rough Cut Feedback

The look of our sequence: very dark and disturbing, works well when colour fades back in.
Good visual effects: Fast editing, weird cutting is 'very cool'
Example of good lighting and framing: the trunk shot looks really cool
Area of improvement: Better music and fade in between titles and footage.
Example of Props: body bag looked real
Costumes: Hoodie then turned more girlie
Setting: forest looked effective
Improvements: Shots of dragging a bit long
What would imagine the film would be about: Murder/s
What ways the sequence could be clearer: Why the film is in reverse, whats the meaning?
How effective were the titles: They could of been longer, maybe could have them coming across the screen.
Most striking shot: The shot of Jess in the mirror in the car
Mood of the opening: Sinister, questions formed, silent assassin
Other films/ programmes makes you think of: CSI, Law and Order. Linking to murder case
Music to create atmosphere: Use of modern instruments creates good use of time

Post Shooting

During the actual shooting we didn't encounter many problems and there were all solved soon after discovering them thanks to teamwork and help from friends.
We are happy with the footage we managed to obtain however there is a lot of editing yet to be done in order to make our title as effective as we hoped.
Now we have finished our shooting we are able to focus are attention to the process of editing. We are yet to create a fitting soundtrack however we also have small clips and samples we will later build on when the oppertunity arises. We are trying to prioritise certain tasks, such as making sure the clips are in order and the right lengths which is vital to the rest of our production.

Further Tasks

-Create and finish the soundtrack
-Create titles
-Smooth over the sequence with transitions and cutting
-Adust clips to soundtrack

Costume

This image is a good example of the costume to be used. I will be wearing black trousers and a black hoody or top like in the picture. However we are aiming to show very little of the identity in order to add mystery to the sequence. The dark clothing is usually associated with dark circumstances, meaning we are going to make use of stereotypes.

However the outfit may have to be changed slightly according to what our group is able to provide. For example I have black trousers but my only available black jacket may be a bit too colourful for it's use as it has large green lettering on the front and white tags from the hood which may stand out too much. It may be possible to borrow a jacket from a friend or family member, which is currently being looked into.

This is another possible option with regards to costume. A leather trench coat done up almost to the top, collars kept up by the neck. Although the identity will be harder to conceal than with the use of the hoody I feel this may be a more successful costume choice. Stereotypes related to the trench coat always reveal a shady looking character, detective or spy which I think suits the plot of our thriller. Our main character is a detective and therefore use of the trench coat despite possibilities of causing problems with regards to shooting footage, may overall create a more effective impression.

Editing ideas

While looking through our images I think once the footage has been shot, trying to create the actual film footage in black and white may create a more earie effect.

Though this has not yet been discussed with the group.

Images

These are a few images we found on the internet which we can relate to the planning of our sequence.

This image shows the kind of impression we aimed to percieve through our costume choice.

This image shows the kind of location we hope to shoot the majority of our sequence at. Although the fog may not be present at the time of shooting we may be able to use effects to create the look of fog.

Although it's unlikely we will be able to get hold of a real body bag this image shows the kind of effect we are aiming for.

An example of the image we hope to create with one of our shots, also showing our knife prop.

Animatics (Currently experiencing uploading problems)

This animatics sequence is just a rough idea of our final opening.

One thing we will have to work on is our music track as the current one on this sequence doesn't fit due to having to repeat(length was too short) it losing the flow of the music.

Pitch

For our thriller project we decided to make a sequence based around a hooded character as afore mentioned in out introduction. The film is about a policewoman who is actually a serial killer, who is working on a murder case where she is actually the killer.

Music ideas : We are hoping to use music which creates a tense and nerve-racking atmosphere. We will experiment with garage band to see if we can use a sample made by our group. Also we will browse the internet, our CD collection and computer play-lists order to hopefully find one or more related tracks. Garage band mainly worked on by Jack Powell.

Effects : Throughout the sequence we hope to use certain effects in order to create out desired atmosphere. These may include blurring images, darkening them, creating fog etc. As of yet we haven't experimented much with these.
We have a few ideas with relation to the text and titles. One member of our group suggested the text appeared on the screen back-to-front and then spun round horizontally. The font we wish to use will be simple and easy to read yet reminiscent of blood and other titles found in already created movie openings.

Props : Knife - Available from any members of the group's homes.
Car - Available from a group member's friend (Josh Johnson legally allowed to drive).
Large Strong Bag - Readily available.
Stuffing for the bag and tape - Group member's homes.
Police outfit - Fancy dress shops and the internet.
Watch - Character's own.
Dark Concealing Clothing - Character's own.

Setting : Forest - Milton country park.
House - Jack Powell's house.

Actors : Police woman/murderer - Jess Walker

Credits : Working title - Reverse
Producer - Fung Yu
Director - Gueseppe Carslon
Actors - Penelope Winters, Chad Kit, Thomas Hardy, Charley Simmons, Kes Bird, Louise Stanford.
Music by - CodeSwtich

Shot ideas

We are planning to shot the sequence in reverse, starting with a hooded figure dumping the body in the woods, then one of the body being taken out of the car by the murderer, followed by the same car driving down the road to the woods, then we'll have a shot of the murderer coming out of a house to reveal that it is a woman police officer.

Throughout the sequence we will use a variety of shots to produce an effective thriller opening. We'll use long shots to show the surrounding area and much closer shots of the figure and also the body to create greater tension within the sequence. We don't want to show too much of the murderer's appearance until the end shot of her coming out the house so a combination of the black hood concealing her face and the shots we use it will keep her hidden so throughout the sequence the audience will ask questions about who the person is.

Labels:

initial ideas

Our main idea for the opening thriller sequence is a murdering policewoman who's in disguise in the opening shots. The opening shot will show a person in black hiding a dead body or something along those lines, at the end of this shot the person will come out of a house or take their black disguising clothes off to reveal themselves as a women police officer.

Dawn Of The Dead Opening

This is the opening sequence for a zombie film called Dawn Of The Dead. In the intro the titles come up on a black screen in a bloody font, in between these titles and scenes introducing the situation, there are quick clips of the 'infected'. This is really effective as you don't see them for long, therefore they have the ability to make you jump as they are placed alongside loud high pitched screaming noises.
The scenes introduce the film by showing the setting and the situation within it. This gives information about both the setting and the storyline.

From this opening we especially like the use of the quick clips and the font.

Introduction

The members within our group are Hope Jack and Jess. We worked together previously on our Kid's TV Titles project. During the last project we encountered a few problems due to our choice of uusing Istopmotion. This seemed to be our only problem as we all worked well together and each contributed significantly to the finished piece. However with our Thriller opening we hope to create a more perfected and professional finished piece. Due to the general nature of the film genre of thriller, this is a vital factor.
